As a beginner to 3DS Max, Flash, and Away3D I found this book to be an excellent way to get started putting them all together on the web. It's full of examples that demonstrate the highlights of the Away3D library. Each example is very short and I found just typing them in by hand helped to clarify things for me. The examples let you see visual results quickly so, as a visual learner, that works for me. There were a couple typos in the examples but nothing that you couldn't figure out on your own to correct. This is the first how-to book that I've read cover to cover and didn't just use as a reference. An awesome job from the authors Richard Olsson and Rob Bateman. 5 stars. Thanks guys.

My name is Brian McClain, and I am an Adobe Certified Expert in Flash. Currently, I am working with Away3D, which I consider the leading and best platform for developing 3D content for the Web. What follows is my review of Away3D is the hottest topic in Flash these days. What is Away3D? It is simply a free 3D engine for Flash or Flex development. More speciafically, it is an open-source library of Actionscript 3 (.as) files that developers use to create 3D shapes, animations and even entire data-driven apps for the Flash Player. Flash Player 11, coming soon, will offer even greater support -- and speed -- for rendering 3D scenes, and so the buzz surrounding Away3D -- and 3D on the web, in general, will continue to grow exponentially. Enter the must-have book, The Essential Guide to 3D on the Web. The author, Rob Bateman, is one of the core developers of Away3D. In simple to follow and well-organized steps, Rob walks the reader through the download and set-up process of the Away3D files... Then it's dive right in and start making 3D shapes. If you have a Flash Actionscript 3 background, the code will make lots of sense, as Away3D is in fact an extension of AS3... This book will equip you with a whole new world of Flash tools -- Cubes, Spheres, Scenes, Lights, Cameras -- action! It is amazing how powerful Away3D is, and it is very impressive how the author was able to make this treasure chest of tools so accessible. There are tutorial files that come with the book, so you can install them and follow along. Away3D is a fairly new kid on the block, so unlike with other technologies, there are very few books available...really just two or three total, compared with dozens for Flash itself. Given this scarcity of material, and the quality of the book, it really is a must-have resource for anyone interested in getting in on the "next big thing" on the Web, which is clearly 3D websites / 3D apps / 3D worlds... While certainly more targeted at beginners, intermediate users of the Away3D library will find plenty of tips and tricks here to make the book worth adding to their library. I've used Away3D in a few projects, but still found the examples and techniques in this book quite helpful and fun to go through. One of the things that always bothered me with Away3D was the reliance on the generic 'init object' in class constructors, so I really appreciated that from the beginning the authors rely on using public properties in code examples.

I do hope the authors get the opportunity to write a more advanced book on the subject though.

One quick word of warning I would offer - if purchasing this book, make sure you update your copy of the Away3D library from the svn server rather than simply downloading the latest .zip file from the Away3D site.
This book gets a lot of points for credibility before starting, because it is written by one of the authors of the Away3D system as well as the very well-qualified Richard Ollson.

It's refreshing these days to find a technical book that is very well written, so that the reader has confidence in the direction and structure of the way the material is delivered. Apart from the quality English, I like the consistent method of introducing a base template for each lesson and extending it by creating and importing new classes.

The authors seem to have made a deliberate effort to proceed by developing a concept and building on it. All the main features and areas of Away3D are evenly treated (and where relevant, general 3D background), and include advanced topics like optimization. Tools like Prefab, which would need a separate manual, are not treated in depth but explained in context.

I agree with the points made by the other positive reviews for this book. The book would be accessible to even relatively inexperienced coders (like me), up to experts, because of the nifty code snippets and design approaches being offered by the "horse's mouth" itself. A couple of the example files required minor common-sense adjustments, like updating class and constructor names. Put this down to the fact the Away3D engine is going through rapid change, keeping up with the equally rapid changes in Flash player. This is a good thing not a bad thing.

This is a very timely and very good book for Away3D which is at the forefront of developments in web multimedia, bringing all the versatility and appeal of Flash to web 3D.
This book is unfortunately not very good. In the two days it took to ship, I learned more about Away3D than the authors seem to know. It's just a re-packaging of the example demos that come with the source distribution. On any advanced topic they gloss over it and then move on. Bones animation? One page, and that's just to say "we think this engine does that."

A rank beginner to programming might be interested in some of the "what is 3D" chatter, but if you already know how to read instructions on a web page, you have graduated past this book.

"Essential" is not the word I'd use. My advice is download it, play with it, and read the examples. It will only take a day to learn more than what's in this book, and you'll save yourself $40.
